Nicotinamide mononucleotide, abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide found in cells. Its structure consists of a nicotinamide ring linked to ribose phosphate, and the compound serves as an intermediate in the salvage pathway for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+. In this pathway, nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase converts nicotinamide and phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate into NMN, after which NMN adenylyltransferase attaches an adenylate group to produce NAD+. Because NAD+ participates in redox reactions and signaling, NMN occupies a central position in cellular metabolism. The molecule is distinct from nicotinamide riboside, though the two are related in NAD+ precursor research.
Beyond its intracellular synthesis, NMN can be taken up from the extracellular environment, although the routes are still debated. Some evidence points to direct transport into cells through specific transporters, while other work suggests dephosphorylation to nicotinamide riboside followed by cellular uptake. Once inside, NMN can be converted to NAD+ by NMN adenylyltransferases; the relative contribution of these routes may differ by tissue, species, and experimental conditions. Researchers continue to investigate which mechanisms dominate in intact organisms and how they affect measured NAD+ levels. Direct measurement in tissues remains technically challenging because NMN can be rapidly metabolized during sample collection.
In the salvage pathway, NMN is generated from nicotinamide and 5-phosphoribosyl-1-pyrophosphate by the enzyme nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase. A second route produces NMN from nicotinamide riboside through phosphorylation by nicotinamide riboside kinases. NMN is then converted to NAD+ by nicotinamide mononucleotide adenylyltransferases, often called NMNAT enzymes. This stepwise route allows cells to recycle nicotinamide and maintain NAD+ levels under changing metabolic conditions. The relative contribution of each route varies by tissue, species, and physiological state, and it remains an active area of research.
Research on NMN has expanded because NAD+ concentrations decline with age in some tissues and because NAD+ participates in energy metabolism, DNA repair, and signaling. Animal studies have reported changes in NAD+ levels after NMN administration, but human data are more limited and often focus on safety, pharmacokinetics, and biomarker changes. Questions remain about oral absorption, tissue distribution, and whether changes in blood NAD+ reflect changes inside specific organs. NMN is not an approved drug, and claims about its clinical effects should be distinguished from established biochemical findings.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide. Its structure combines a nicotinamide ring, a ribose sugar, and a phosphate group. The compound exists in cells as an intermediate in the production of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, a central redox cofactor. NMN is distinct from nicotinamide riboside, another related pyridine nucleotide, although the two compounds can converge in metabolic pathways. Its chemical formula is C11H15N2O8P, and it carries a net negative charge at physiological pH.
| Property | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chemical formula | C11H15N2O8P | Neutral form; often supplied as a salt or hydrate. |
| Molecular weight | 334.22 g/mol | Calculated for C11H15N2O8P. |
| Appearance | White to off-white powder | Color can vary with purity and hydration. |
| Solubility | Soluble in water | Aqueous solutions are acidic and stability depends on pH and temperature. |
| Typical storage | −20 °C or below, desiccated | Protect from light; avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles. |
Research on NMN has focused on aging, metabolic regulation, exercise capacity, and insulin sensitivity, but findings are preliminary. Many human trials are small, short in duration, and use different endpoints, which complicates comparison across studies. No national regulator has approved NMN as a therapeutic drug for any indication. In some countries it is sold as a supplement or research chemical, while other jurisdictions have questioned its status under food or supplement laws. Claims about extending human lifespan or reversing aging are not supported by established clinical evidence.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide found in the cells of many organisms, including bacteria, plants, and mammals. Its structure consists of a nicotinamide ring attached to a ribose-phosphate group. NMN functions as an intermediate in the NAD+ salvage pathway, a recycling route that regenerates nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. The enzyme nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase produces NMN from nicotinamide and phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate. A second enzyme, NMN adenylyltransferase, then converts NMN into NAD+.
Dietary sources of NMN include small amounts in certain vegetables, fruits, and other foods, although exact values vary by sample and method. Endogenous NMN concentrations are tightly regulated and often low, making measurement in blood or tissues technically demanding. After oral intake, NMN is thought to be rapidly metabolized in the intestine and liver, and intact NMN may not reach all tissues at high levels. Some rodent studies report increases in tissue NAD+ after oral NMN, while human data remain limited and sometimes rely on blood NAD+ metabolites rather than direct tissue measures.
Research interest in NMN increased after animal studies reported that oral or injected NMN can raise NAD+ levels in some tissues. How NMN is absorbed and distributed in humans is not fully established. Some evidence suggests extracellular NMN may be dephosphorylated to nicotinamide riboside before cellular uptake, while other studies propose specific transport routes. Direct human data on these mechanisms remain limited. Regulatory status also varies: in some countries NMN is treated as a dietary supplement, while elsewhere it is restricted or requires approval, and these differences affect labeling, sale, and research.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, commonly abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide found in the cells of many organisms. Its structure consists of a nicotinamide group linked to a ribose sugar that carries a phosphate group. NMN is an intermediate in the biosynthesis of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+, a coenzyme involved in many metabolic reactions. The abbreviation usually refers to the beta anomer, though related forms can exist. In scientific literature, NMN is distinct from nicotinamide riboside, another NAD+ precursor.
NAD+ serves as a coenzyme in redox reactions and as a substrate for enzymes involved in DNA repair and cellular signaling. In the salvage pathway, nicotinamide is converted to NMN by the enzyme NAMPT. NMN is then converted to NAD+ by NMNAT enzymes. A separate route links nicotinamide riboside to NMN through phosphorylation. These pathways maintain NAD+ levels, which can decline with age or metabolic stress in some tissues. The relative contribution of circulating NMN to tissue NAD+ remains an active area of study.
Research on NMN includes cell studies, animal experiments, and a growing number of human trials. Many early findings come from mice, where changes in NAD+ levels and metabolic markers have been reported. Human data are more limited, and questions remain about effective routes of administration, tissue distribution, and long-term effects. Some trials measure NAD+ in blood or tissue, while others assess physical function or metabolic outcomes. Regulatory status differs between countries, and NMN is not universally approved as a dietary supplement or therapeutic agent.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, commonly abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide. Its structure combines a nicotinamide ring with a ribose sugar and a phosphate group. The compound appears in cells across many organisms as an intermediate in the production of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+. Because NMN sits close to NAD+ in metabolism, it has drawn interest in biochemistry and aging research. The molecule is not a dietary essential nutrient in the classical sense, and its presence in food is generally low and variable.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, commonly abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide. Its structure consists of a nicotinamide ring attached to a ribose sugar that carries a phosphate group. The molecular formula is C11H15N2O8P, and the molar mass is about 334.22 grams per mole. In cells, NMN is an intermediate in the salvage pathway that recycles nicotinamide to maintain NAD+ levels. It is not the same compound as NAD+, although it is a direct precursor in one enzymatic step.
Inside cells, the enzyme nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase, or NAMPT, converts nicotinamide and a ribose-phosphate donor into NMN. A second enzyme, NMN adenylyltransferase, then converts NMN into NAD+. NAD+ participates in redox reactions and serves as a substrate for signaling enzymes such as sirtuins, PARPs, and CD38. Because NAD+ levels tend to decline with age in many organisms, NMN has drawn interest as a possible way to influence that decline. Whether oral NMN reliably raises NAD+ in human tissues, and whether any such change modifies disease risk, remain open research questions.
=== Lawsuits === In the late 1980s, Barker accused the American Humane Society and the United Activists for Animal Rights of condoning animal cruelty on the set of Project X and in several other media projects on the basis of allowing a cattle prod and a gun on set, and a rumored beating of a chimpanzee on set. American Humane responded by suing Barker for $10 million, citing libel, slander and invasion of privacy. American Humane claimed that there had been a two-year "vendetta" against them behind the accusations. In a series of public advertisements along with the lawsuit, American Humane responded to Barker's claims that his allegations were made based on insufficient and misleading information. The suit was eventually settled by Barker's insurance company, which paid American Humane $300,000. In 1994, former model Dian Parkinson filed a lawsuit against Barker alleging sexual harassment following a three-year affair while working on The Price Is Right. Parkinson, who alleged that she was extorted by threats of firing, later dropped her lawsuit, claiming the stress from the ordeal was damaging her health. In 1995, model Holly Hallstrom left The Price Is Right and later filed suit against Barker, alleging that the reason she was fired was not so much because of her 14-pound (6.4 kg) medication-mediated weight gain (as documented) but because, to Barker's displeasure, she refused to give false information to the media regarding Parkinson's suit, as she alleges Barker had requested she do.

The standard bait distribution density is 75 baits/km2 in rural areas and 150 baits/km2 in urban and developed areas. ORV programs were initiated in Europe in the 1980s, Canada in 1985, and in the United States in 1990. ORV is a preventive measure to eliminate rabies in wild animal vectors of disease, mainly foxes, raccoons, raccoon dogs, coyotes and jackals, but also can be used for dogs in developing countries. Implementation of ORV programs in the United States has led to the elimination of the coyote rabies virus variant in 2003 and gray fox variant during 2013. Furthermore, ORV has been successful in preventing the westward expansion of the raccoon rabies enzootic front beyond Alabama.
==== Second Sino-Japanese War ==== Liu played on patriotic sentiment during the War of Resistance against Japan. In 1937, he attended a meeting of the Ya'an Anti-Japanese National Salvation Association, admitting his past "mistakes" in fighting other Chinese. He also donated a sum of 500,000 yuan to the war effort. However, while other Sichuan warlords such as Liu Xiang, Yang Sen, Li Jiayu, and Wang Mingzhang sent troops to fight the Japanese, Liu Wenhui refrained from doing the same, citing the need to defend the Tibetan frontier and a lack of equipment. Therefore, Liu Wenhui's 24th Army did not directly participate in the war. Instead, Liu's policy was that of "resisting Japan by building Xikang." According to the state-run New Xikang Post (新康報), the province complied with the wartime orders of the central government regarding resource and population mobilization. After the flight of the Nationalist government to Chongqing, Chiang became interested in establishing a presence in Xikang, proposing in either late 1938 or early 1939 to establish the "Xichang Headquarters" if ever Chongqing were to fall. To prepare for this task, he appointed Zhang Dulun, another of Liu's Baoding classmates, to lead the headquarters and moved the 36th (German-trained) division to Xichang. A power struggle developed in Xichang between Zhang and Liu, with Zhang attempting various measures to undermine Liu's control over Xichang.

Historian John Lewis Gaddis claims that Solidarity survived repression because it embodied a distinctive national identity that communist authorities were unable to suppress, while economic stagnation increasingly discredited the ruling party's ideology. In February 1989 the Polish People's Republic opened talks with opposition, known as the Polish Round Table Agreement, which allowed elections with participation of anti-Communist parties in June 1989. These negotiations legalized Solidarity and established the framework for partially free parliamentary elections, which facilitated sweeping victory for opposition candidates and effectively ended communist rule in Poland. However, not every Communist regime showed the same restraint that year; a telling example stemmed from Chinese authorities, whose forces shot down hundreds of peaceful demonstrators in Tiananmen Square. Events in China provided a distinctive contrast, if not a vivid and grim demonstration of what the alternative looked like, to the conscious rejection of violence that shaped the East European revolutions.
==== Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump ==== On August 29, 2025, the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled 7-4 that many of the Trump tariffs were invalid. The Appeals Court had ruled that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (1977), did not grant the broad powers which the Trump administration was claiming. This decision did not affect some specific tariffs, such as steel or aluminum which were increased under other presidential authority. On February 20, 2026, the Supreme Court decided in Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump that the IEEPA did not authorise the president to impose tariffs. All tariffs imposed under IEEPA were struck down.
== Mathematical models == There are several mathematical models that describe collective cell motion. Typically, a Newtonian equation of motion for a system of cells is solved. Several forces act on each individual cell, examples are friction (between environment and other cells), chemotaxis and self-propulsion. The latter implies that cells are active matter far from thermal equilibrium that are able to generate force due to myosin-actin contractile motion. An overview over physical description of collective cell migration explains that the following types of models can be used:
The two substrates of this enzyme are D-sorbitol 6-phosphate and oxidised nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+). Its products are fructose 6-phosphate (shown in its open-chain form), reduced NADH, and a proton. This enzyme belongs to the family of oxidoreductases, specifically those acting on the CH-OH group of donor with NAD+ or NADP+ as acceptor. The systematic name of this enzyme class is D-sorbitol-6-phosphate:NAD+ 2-oxidoreductase. Other names in common use include ketosephosphate reductase, ketosephosphate reductase, D-sorbitol 6-phosphate dehydrogenase, D-sorbitol-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, sorbitol-6-P-dehydrogenase, and D-glucitol-6-phosphate dehydrogenase. This enzyme participates in fructose and mannose metabolism.
Tropoelastin is a protein, of size 72kDa, that comes together via cross-links to form elastin in the extracellular matrix of the cell. The cross-link formation process is mediated by lysyl oxidase. One of the major reasons that elastin can withstand high levels of stress in the body without experiencing any physical deformation is that the underlying tropoelastin contains domains that are highly hydrophobic. These hydrophobic domains, consisting overwhelmingly of alanine, proline, glycine, and valine, tend towards instability and disorderliness, ensuring that the elastin does not lock into any specific confirmation. Thus, ELPs consisting of the Val-Pro-Gly-X-Gly monomeric units, which bear resemblance to the repetitive tropoelastin hydrophobic domains, are highly disordered below their Tt. Even above their Tt in their aggregated state, ELPs are only partially ordered. This is due to the fact that the proline and glycine amino acids are present in high amounts in the ELP. Glycine, due to the lack of a bulky side chain, enables the biopolymer to be flexible and proline prevents the formation of stable hydrogen bonds in the ELP backbone. Certain segments of the ELP may be able to form instantaneous type II β turns, but these turns are not long-lasting and do not resemble true β sheets, when the NMR chemical shifts are compared.

Liquids are useful as lubricants due to their ability to form a thin, freely flowing layer between solid materials. Lubricants such as oil are chosen for viscosity and flow characteristics that are suitable throughout the operating temperature range of the component. Oils are often used in engines, gear boxes, metalworking, and hydraulic systems for their good lubrication properties.
Francisco Rodríguez, an economist, called on Venezuela's National Assembly to reject the deal, describing it as "predatory" and arguing that transferring Venezuelan oil wealth to the United States was unconstitutional and not in the country's interest, particularly when carried out under the threat of force. Gregory Brew, an energy historian and analyst at the Eurasia Group, expressed skepticism about the agreement, predicting significant opposition to any deal that would give the U.S. government effective control over Venezuelan resources. He compared the arrangement to the early 20th-century control exercised by the Anglo-Persian Oil Company over oil resources in Iraq and Iran, and suggested that for Trump, control over oil appeared to be an objective in itself, with the arrangement carrying colonial overtones. On 31 August, The New York Times reported that the arrangement would give the Defense Department the option to acquire up to 35 per cent of the parent company of Betancourt's firm through a warrant, described by two people familiar with the deal as a penny warrant convertible into shares for as little as one cent. The White House said the same day that the partnership came "all at zero cost to the United States", that the federal government would be guaranteed 20 per cent of the company's output at production cost with the State Department holding a right of first refusal over the remainder, and that the United States would hold a veto over appointments to the company's board, a majority of whose members would have to be American citizens.
MHC Class II molecules are a class of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules normally found only on professional antigen-presenting cells such as dendritic cells, macrophages, some endothelial cells, thymic epithelial cells, and B cells. These cells are important in initiating immune responses. Antigens presented by MHC class II molecules are exogenous, originating from extracellular proteins rather than cytosolic and endogenous sources like those presented by MHC class I. The loading of a MHC class II molecule occurs by phagocytosis. Extracellular proteins are endocytosed into a phagosome, which subsequently fuses with a lysosome to create a phagolysosome. Within the phagolysosome, lysosomal enzymes degrade the proteins into peptide fragments. These fragments are then loaded into the peptide-binding groove of the MHC class II molecule. Once loaded, the MHC class II-peptide complexes are transported to the plasma membrane via vesicular transport, where they present the antigens to the extracellular environment. In humans, the MHC class II protein complex is encoded by the human leukocyte antigen gene complex (HLA). Class II HLAs are composed of the classical HLA-DP, HLA-DQ, and HLA-DR and non-classical HLA-DM and HLA-DO MHC molecules.
=== Animal synthesis === There is some information on serum vitamin C concentrations maintained in animal species that are able to synthesize vitamin C. One study of several breeds of dogs reported an average of 35.9 μmol/L. A report on goats, sheep and cattle reported ranges of 100–110, 265–270 and 160–350 μmol/L, respectively. The biosynthesis of ascorbic acid in vertebrates starts with the formation of UDP-glucuronic acid. UDP-glucuronic acid is formed when UDP-glucose undergoes two oxidations catalyzed by the enzyme UDP-glucose 6-dehydrogenase. UDP-glucose 6-dehydrogenase uses the co-factor NAD+ as the electron acceptor. The transferase UDP-glucuronate pyrophosphorylase removes a UMP and glucuronokinase, with the cofactor ADP, removes the final phosphate leading to d-glucuronic acid. The aldehyde group of this compound is reduced to a primary alcohol using the enzyme glucuronate reductase and the cofactor NADPH, yielding l-gulonic acid. This is followed by lactone formation—utilizing the hydrolase gluconolactonase—between the carbonyl on C1 and hydroxyl group on C4. l-Gulonolactone then reacts with oxygen, catalyzed by the enzyme L-gulonolactone oxidase (which is nonfunctional in humans and other Haplorrhini primates; see Unitary pseudogenes) and the cofactor FAD+. This reaction produces 2-oxogulonolactone (2-keto-gulonolactone), which spontaneously undergoes enolization to form ascorbic acid. Reptiles and older orders of birds make ascorbic acid in their kidneys. Recent orders of birds and most mammals make ascorbic acid in their liver.
Kava is used for medicinal, religious, political, cultural, and social purposes throughout the Pacific. These cultures have a great respect for the plant and place a high importance on it. In Fiji, for example, a formal yaqona (kava) ceremony will often accompany important social, political, or religious functions, usually involving a ritual presentation of the bundled roots as a sevusevu (gift) and drinking of the yaqona itself. Due to the importance of kava in religious rituals and the seemingly (from the Western point of view) unhygienic preparation method, its consumption was discouraged or even banned by Christian missionaries. The nakamal, traditionally the central meeting place in Vanuatu, serves as a cultural and social hub where kava is consumed to facilitate communal gathering, dialogue, and the exchange of knowledge across different groups and generations.
